ABSTRACT

Introduction: Absolute uterine factor infertility affects approximately one in 500 childbearing-age women and it was considered the only untreatable female factor. The causes are the congenital or surgical absence of the uterus or determined by uterine anatomical alterations, which do not allow the uterus to carry out a pregnancy. Uterus transplantation is a unique case in which aspects of assisted reproduction are combined with aspects of organ transplantation.
Objective: To describe the basic aspects of uterine transplant research in humans and the preliminary experiences.
Methods: An extensive bibliographic search was carried out in different national and international bibliographic databases of Infomed Virtual Health Library (PubMed/Medline, Lilacs, SciELO, BMC, Cumed). To do so, the structured and multilingual DeCS vocabulary was used. The selected materials allowed elaborating the historical evolution of the theme, as well as its behavior in different stages. As a result, 432 documents were obtained, 57 of them were used to prepare the review article.
Conclusions: This type of transplant is a field that is still evolving, but it can be considered a therapeutic option for patients with infertility who wish to have a child and have no other alternative. This technique is recommended as long as it is performed in centers where there is experience in the subject and with observance to strict ethical standards.
