Nursing narrative: becoming a tool for caring for people

ABSTRACT

Introduction: A significant aspect of nursing education and practice is the acquisition of procedural and cognitive skills and abilities. However, a distinctive feature of the discipline is the establishment of an empathetic, sensitive, and humane relationship with patients. This requires nurses to possess qualities such as respect, commitment, compassion, and sensitivity. Development: This narrative examines the expectations and realities of practice, as observed in the formative practice of nursing students in a cardiovascular risk prevention program. It highlights the interaction with patients and the integration of nursing knowledge with the competencies of being, which are linked to the understanding of the environment, history, and self-care needs of patients. This understanding then informs the formulation of individualized care plans. The self-care deficit theory proposed by Orem was analyzed through the lens of the Empirical Conceptual Theoretical System (ECTS), the interactive-integrative view, and nursing knowledge patterns. Conclusions: The construction and validation of nursing knowledge is achieved by reflecting on practice in diverse care settings. Nursing narratives illustrate the skills of integrating theory and practice, interweaving models, theories, and empirical data. This interaction makes the nurse the most valuable instrument of care in nursing practice, allowing the recognition of all dimensions of the human being within a holistic vision that facilitates the integration of scientific nursing knowledge contained in models and theories.
