ABSTRACT

Introduction: The management of extensive and deep wounds continues to be a challenge in medical care. Malnutrition complicates the healing process and is a cause of failure in surgical interventions. The relationship between wound healing and malnutrition is poorly addressed in the literature, also with inadequacies in health care practice.
Objective: To provide an update on the wound healing process focusing on the nutritional elements on which it depends.
Methods: A bibliographic search of articles indexed in the PubMed, Scielo and Medline databases was carried out, mainly from the last five years. The fundamental aspects of each phase of the normal healing process were summarized and the importance of specific nutrients in the process was justified.
Conclusions: Healing is a complex process, intimately related to metabolic activities and nutritional status; therefore, it requires energy, nutrients and anabolic stimuli. Adequate nutritional assessment and optimal nutritional management should be part of wound management.
