ABSTRACT

Introduction: the primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a rare odontogenic tumor. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017 and 2022 classified it as a benign, mixed neoplasm. To date, only 23 cases have been documented in the world. Objectives: to analyze clinical and radiographic histopathological characteristics and treatment reported to date. Material and methods: an exhaustive electronic search was carried out in august and September of the year 2022, with date restrictions from 2014 where the TOP was reported for the first time. PubMed and ScienceDirect databases were accessed. Results: a total of 16 publications were included, representing 23 reported cases of TOP. Conclusions: TOP is a benign mixed odontogenic neoplasm, with prevalence in the first two decades of life, it presents clinically as an increase in volume, mainly mandibular and asymptomatic. Radiographically, a unilocular or multilocular lesion associated with an unerupted tooth is observed. Due to its low prevalence, it is essential to carry out a complete clinical, radiographic and histopathological study for the definitive diagnosis of this pathology. The treatment of choice is enucleation and extraction of the affected tooth. Larger studies with long-term follow-up are needed to create a strict treatment protocol, since few cases have been reported to date.
