ABSTRACT
Introduction: nearly 1.1 million children and adolescents in Latin America have been victims of sexual violence at some point in their lives. Objective: to characterize sexual abuse in children under 16 years of age in the southern area of the province of Ciego de Ávila.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, whose universe consisted of 156 children under 16 years of age who were alleged victims of sexual crimes. The data were collected from the sexual crimes registry of the provincial forensic medicine service and from the files of each case. The study variables were age, type of sexual crime, sex, perpetrator of the crime and place of occurrence.
Results: the majority of the children in the study were between 11 and 15 years old and were female. The sexual crime for which the greatest number of complaints were made was lascivious abuse, especially in ages between 6 and 10 years.
Conclusions: this study allowed us to know the magnitude and impact of sexual abuse as part of child abuse in the southern area of the province of Ciego de Ávila. The research shows evidence and alerts about a child health problem that must be known and analyzed to carry out community promotion and prevention actions.
