ABSTRACT

Sindbis virus (SINV), an alphavirus transmitted by mosquitoes, of the Togaviridae family, present in Eurasia, Africa and Oceania. Antibodies against SINV are detected in humans in several geographic areas, but clinical infections caused by this virus are mainly reported in Finland, where it is associated with fever, rash, and arthritis, known as Pogosta disease. Treatment is symptomatic. Most clinical cases occur in Finland during August and September, when the primary vectors, the ornithophilous mosquito species Culex and Culiseta, are abundant. The incidence of Pogosta disease has been highest in the eastern parts of Finland in recent decades.
