ABSTRACT

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer in humans. It appears mainly on sun-damaged skin and rarely develops on mucous membranes or the palms and soles. The mechanism of basal cell carcinoma formation through ultraviolet radiation is direct DNA damage, indirect DNA damage through reactive oxygen species and immune suppression. Flaps are the most common surgical methods in cases of facial defects. Indications for their use include the large defect size and the need for an excellent cosmetic result. The rotation flap is created using adjacent tissue that is rotated to close a defect. We present the case of a patient with basal cell carcinoma of the upper lip, treated by excision and advancement flap reconstruction with an optimal cosmetic and functional result.
