ABSTRACT

Introduction: the National Institute of Cancerology (INCan) serves as a referral center for patients with oncology diagnoses from across the country. The Palliative Care Service (SCP) has been operating since 2011, offering multidisciplinary care that improves quality of life and alleviates suffering. Specific tumor clinics have been established to enhance palliative care approaches. The integration of palliative care into oncology management has been gradual. Objective: to describe the history of the Palliative Care Service, its care model, and part of the integration process. Material and methods: data was requested from the clinical archives and biostatistics departments regarding care provided between 2012 and 2024, and from the pharmacy department on opioid consumption from 2013 to 2022. Information was also retrieved from INCan's internal records. Results: there is a noticeable increase in both the number of patients served and opioid consumption. Changes in these indicators have been observed, partly due to the pandemic. Efforts have been made to advance the integration process between oncology and palliative care. Conclusions: significant progress has been made in enhancing collaboration between oncology and palliative care, thanks to the achieved synergy. Continued efforts are necessary to advance this process and strengthen timely referrals to the Palliative Care Service.
