The transformation of the Mexican health system

ABSTRACT

This text presents the Mexican experience regarding the process of transformation of health services based on the recovery of the leadership of the Mexican government in the health care of the population through the centralization of health care services in the IMSS-BIENESTAR; the new institution created by the Government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to provide protection to people without social security. First, the health’s system historical background is presented. Indeed, the discussion about the balances and consequences left by the decentralization of the health system that began in 1980 decade is addressed. Then, the beginning of the fourth process of transformation develops the arguments based on the centralization of health services in Mexico, the institutional design, and legal reforms. The final section is focus on successes and challenges in the process of transforming the national health system.
