ABSTRACT

Introduction: the needs of the patient wearing a removable dental prosthesis (RDP) are particular, different aspects must be considered in the treatment so that therapeutic success is achieved, due to this, a comprehensive diagnosis that includes an evaluation of salivary glandular function (SGF) or sialometry is most importance since in this population the prevalence of xerostomia and hyposalivation are frequent. Objective: identify the relevance of the diagnosis of SGF or sialometry in treatment with RDP. Material and methods: a bibliographic search were carried out in nine databases on publications reviewed in the period 2004-2024 that included the terms sialometry, salivary flow, xerostomia, hyposalivation, removable dental prosthesis, older adult and/or quality of life. Results: no scientific evidence was identified that mentions performing SGF or sialometry diagnosis prior to treatment with RDP. Conclusion: the timely diagnosis of salivary gland hypofunction (SGH) through the sialometry test plays a fundamental role in taking preventive measures that allow the patient to maintain adherence to the prosthetic treatment, impacting the improvement of their quality of life. For this reason, this diagnostic test must be implemented before treatment with RDP.
