ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of patients with perinatal depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, with a cut-off of ≥ 12 points.
Materials and Methods: Prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study conducted in the postpartum period of patients seen at the Hospital de la Mujer de Culiacán, Sinaloa, between October and December 2022. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms. Descriptive statistics and prevalence calculations were performed using STATA 13.0, and p ‹ 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: We examined 141 patients and obtained a prevalence of perinatal depression of 14.18%. Demographic analysis revealed that 58.2% of the participants with depression were multigestational and 41.8% were primigravid. Several factors were analyzed in relation to perinatal depression, but no statistically significant associations were found.
Conclusions: Mental health is fundamental in preconception and prenatal care processes because it significantly influences pregnancy outcomes. This issue requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. To facilitate early identification of depressive disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period, health care providers should use the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Although the established cut-off point for screening is 12 points, some studies in the Mexican population suggest a cut-off point of 10 points.
