ABSTRACT

The liver is an active organ which under normal conditions is quiescent, but under different stimuli, it can overcome that stage. In general, over the years cells permanently lose their proliferative capacity and display important phenotypic changes as well as several alterations in intracellular mechanisms relevant to the appropriate cell function. Together, these alterations are known as cellular senescence. Here, the role of senescence in health and disease processes in the liver tissue is analyzed.
