Epidemiological description of children with congenital heart diseases in Quintana Roo, Mexico

ABSTRACT

Introduction: congenital heart diseases (CHD) are the most common type of congenital defects at birth, and their prevalence varies by region. Objective: to describe the characteristics of patients treated in the Pediatric Cardiology reference center located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Material and methods: cross-sectional study that included patients treated by the pediatric cardiology service from March 2020 to December 2023. The analysis of demographic data and the type of congenital heart disease is presented. Results: the study included 1,848 patients, of whom 1,096 (59%) had no cardiovascular pathology; 634 (34.3%) patients had some type of structural heart disease. The most common type of CHD was acyanotic with increased pulmonary flow (32.4%), of which ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus were the most frequent. Conclusions: in approximately 30% of patients referred to a Cardiology service, the presence of a congenital heart disease is confirmed, of which heart diseases with increased pulmonary flow are the most frequent.
