ABSTRACT
Introduction: the consequences of the surgical treatment of breast cancer, such as lymphedema, decreased muscle strength and the presence of residual pain, can directly affect the functionality of the upper limb and the quality of life of patients. The main objective of our study is to evaluate the functionality and muscle strength of the upper limb after rehabilitation treatment in postoperative patients for breast cancer.
Material and methods: an analytical, quasi-experimental, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out on 25 women from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) Puebla, aged 20 to 60, with a post-operative diagnosis of breast cancer no older than six months. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire was used to evaluate functionality and muscle strength was measured by dynamometer.
Results: 25 patients were included, mean age 49 ± 6 years, 36% had lymphedema. A significant improvement was observed in both functionality (71 ± 17 vs 61 ± 15, p = 0.000) and muscle strength (16 ± 3 vs 18 ± 3 kg, p = 0.000) after rehabilitation treatment.
Conclusion: rehabilitation of postoperative breast cancer patients in the first six months after surgery improves the physical and functional capacities of the upper limb.
