ABSTRACT

Newborns of multiple pregnancies are considered high risk because of their greater impact on the health care system and the higher frequency of complications. The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of newborns of multiple pregnancies born at Hospital Angeles Lomas, a tertiary level hospital, and to compare them with those reported in the world literature. The clinical records were reviewed and the demographic implications and complications of this special group were analyzed. Information was obtained on 422 multiple pregnancy products of which 407 (96.4%) corresponded to twins and 15 (3.6%) to triplets. Cesarean section was the most frequent route of birth with 364 (86.3%) births. Vaginal delivery was reported only among twin pregnancies with 58 (13.7%) births. The mean gestational age was 34.6 SDG. The average weight was 1,970 g. The most frequent admission diagnosis was prematurity, followed by low weight for gestational age. A significant percentage had both diagnoses on admission. The physiological nursery was the most frequent admission area (52.6%) followed by intensive care (24.4%). Intermediate therapy (22.5%) and growth and development (0.5%). The demographic characteristics and evolution of the newborns from multiple pregnancies obtained at HAL are very similar to those reported in the world literature.
