ABSTRACT

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis in children, caused mainly by trauma, limits jaw movement and affects facial development. Treatment is surgical and aims to restore function, improve aesthetics and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to present a case of successful pediatric mandibular ankylosis. The patient was treated with interposition arthroplasty with a temporalis myofascial flap, and had a 30 mm mouth opening with no recurrence at one year of follow-up. This case reaffirms the effectiveness and safety of this technique to restore joint function in children with TMJ ankylosis.
