ABSTRACT

Root scaling and planning is known as the most successful treatment in periodontal disease, since it reduces periodontal pathogens and helps to eliminate dental plaque and calculus, but by itself, it cannot completely eliminate or prevent bacterial recolonization from occurring. Photodynamic therapy is a type of adjunctive therapy in the treatment of periodontitis that involves light-induced inactivation of microorganisms or molecules. Photodynamic therapy has been applied to remove supragingival and subgingival plaque and bacteria and the results obtained based on the literature are; clinically photodynamic therapy does not show significant results compared to root scaling and planning alone. Microbiologically, it has been observed that there is a decrease in periodontal pathogens, mainly Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, which is mainly found in patients with grade C periodontitis.
