ABSTRACT

Probiotics are considered "saprophytic or commensal microorganisms" that withstand acidic and slightly alkaline pH so they are not affected by gastric or pancreatic secretions, they adhere to epithelial cells hindering the adhesion and colonization of harmful microorganisms and have an important antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria, they have beneficial effects for health inadequate administrations. Several studies demonstrate the behavior within the intestinal microbiota, actions, effects, and their importance when used in the dental field. Studies on the effects of probiotics in humans are very promising and indicate different degrees of effectiveness in the prevention and treatment of the most frequent oral diseases, suggesting the use of these microorganisms as adjuvants for treatment in the oral cavity. The use of probiotics is considered an effective and safe alternative for the preventive treatment of the most common dental diseases such as caries, periodontitis, halitosis, and candidiasis. However, their use in oral health is still recent and more studies are needed to confirm their effects and efficacy as an alternative in the treatment of oral cavity diseases and to reduce the use of antibiotics.
