Educational Intervention on the Use of Phytotherapy in A Rural Population of Holguín

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Phytotherapy is one of the modality of natural and traditional medicine most used by the population, however, there is a certain lack of knowledge of the true usefulness and properties of medicinal plants.
Objective: To develop an educational intervention on the use of phytotherapy with patients from a rural population in Báguanos municipality.
Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study of educational intervention was carried out with patients from the rural health area no. 29, ``Rolando Ricardo Estrada`` Polyclinic, Báguanos municipality, Holguín, during October-November 2021, which had two stages. To collect the variables studied (age, sex, level of education, use of phytotherapy) a survey was carried out and the information was collected from a questionnaire applied before and after the intervention; its results were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: There was a predominance of the age range of 50 to 59 years (33.3%), male sex (53.3%) and university education level (33.3%). Prior to the intervention, 70.0% of the researched people reported not having used medicinal plants, while 73.3% of them had inadequate knowledge. After the intervention, 80.0% said they would begin to use medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases, and 86.7% acquired adequate knowledge about them.
Conclusions: Prior to the intervention (stage 1), most of the researched people had little knowledge of the use of phytotherapy, and once it was completed (stage 2), they had acquired adequate knowledge to affirm that they would use medicinal plants in the relief of frequent diseases in their health area.
