ABSTRACT
An original article must meet up with certain standards and requirements established by scientific journals, based on international consensus of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, with the purpose of standardizing and evaluating research papers waiting to be published. These requirements differ depending on the type of journal. Peer-evaluated journals perform a peer review process, reducing the acceptance rate but increasing their impact factor. In contrast, non-peer evaluated journals have less strict criteria, which results in higher acceptance rates. In order to review research papers, journals rely on editorials that facilitate this process through open-access platforms to improve its reach. An indexed journal is included in databases, increasing its accessibility, visibility, and prestige. To achieve this, the journal must meet standards such as peer review, regular publications, and originality to maintain its high quality. A useful tool to determine a journal´s influence is the Impact Factor (IF), a bibliometric indicator that measures a journal´s scientific relevance based on the frequency of citations during a two-year period. The process of indexing a journal consists of several stages, going up a period of five to 10 years. This process starts with a 1) proper planning of the journal´s theme, organizing an editorial committee, and establishing guidelines for the initial publications, followed by 2) meeting quality standards through peer reviews and indexing in secondary databases, and then 3) applying for indexation in major databases once the necessary requirements are met, so the database can make an 4) evaluation and acceptance in order to 5) obtain the Impact Factor once the journal has been indexed and has accumulated enough citations.REFERENCES
