ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mercury is recognized as an environmental pollutant that causes serious effects on human health. One of the least studied damages result-ing from occupational exposure is chronic kidney disease, a problem that the health system has to face, since many cases are determined in advanced stages of the disease and are not identified with work. Objective: To evaluate the useful-ness of microalbuminuria as a biomarker of early kidney damage due to mercury exposure in workers in the chlorine industry. Material and method: A descriptive crosssectional study was carried out, with an analytical component to a sample of 70 exposed in the period 2017-2018. Microalbuminuria, inorganic mercury and some indicators of kidney function were analyzed. The diagnostic utility was determined using the ROC curve, by calculating the sensitivity and specificity parameters. An analysis was performed using the Spearman linear correlation coefficient considering a statistical significance of p < 0.05. Results: 60% had more than 10 years of exposure; 60% presented levels of exposure to mercury in urine; 18.6% of the workers exhibited microalbuminuria higher than the normal limit, obtaining an ascending linear correlation between microalbu-minuria and urine mercury levels. Conclusions: With levels within the range of exposure to mercury, alterations in microalbuminuria are evidenced; this being a useful diagnostic test for early kidney damage in those exposed to mercury.REFERENCES
