ABSTRACT
Background: Post-sepsis syndrome is an emerging condition that has attracted
considerable interest among clinicians and researchers over the past two decades. It is
characterized by a significantly increased risk of death and poor quality of life associated
with a number of long-term sequelae that persist after sepsis.
Methodology: Descriptive (narrative) review of post-sepsis syndrome. PubMed
and Google Scholar databases were searched for articles published in English between
2000 and 2020 using MeSH terms: Post-sepsis syndrome; Sepsis; Mortality that included
epidemiologic data and suggestions for prevention of the syndrome.
Results: A total of 2,800 articles were found, of which 35 were selected for review
and two others for additional epidemiologic information.
Conclusión: Mortality rates after surviving the initial episode of sepsis remain
high, depending on its severity. The one-year mortality rate varies from 7 to 43%, and
the five-year mortality rate can reach 80%, which is most often secondary to postsepsis
syndrome because it increases the risk of readmission due to infection and
the incidence of cognitive dysfunction, mental health problems, kidney damage, and
cardiovascular disease.
