ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the correlation between obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and
body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective and analytical study collecting data on weight, height, gender,
apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Mallampati Scale was done at Clínica de Vanguardia
en Otorrinolaringología of Hospital Ángeles del Carmen, Guadalajara, Mexico, from October 2011 to August 2023.
Results: There were included 311 patients with an average age of 49.1 ± 13.9 years; majority were male (82.6%,
n = 257). The average BMI was 31.5 ± 6.2 kg/m
² and the average neck circumference was 44.6 ± 5.1 cm. Most
patients had obstructive hypopnea (60.8%, n = 189) and an average AHI of 40.0 ± 28.7 events/hour. A significant
positive correlation was found between AHI and BMI (r = 0.389, p ‹ 0.001) and neck circumference (r = 0.432,
p ‹ 0.001). The Epworth Sleepiness Scale showed a weak correlation with AHI (r = 0.277, p ‹ 0.001). Men had
higher AHI, BMI, and neck circumference values compared to women.
Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive evaluation including neck circumference,
BMI, and the Epworth Scale to improve the detection and management of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea
syndrome.
