ABSTRACT
Background: Supraglottic edema is a clinical condition that presents with
inflammation of the supraglottic structures and implies a fatal risk due to critical
airway obstruction. Although most cases of supraglottic edema are associated with an
infectious etiology, there are rare presentations of this condition with non-infectious
origins, such as autoimmune diseases, vasculitis, or iatrogenic causes.
Clinical case: A series of cases of patients with supraglottic edema of uncommon
causes.
Conclusions: These cases demonstrate that not all supraglottic edema is necessarily
an abscess or infection; therefore, careful clinical evaluation and judicious use
of imaging studies are crucial to determine the underlying cause and avoid unnecessary
invasive treatments.
