ABSTRACT

Oral health is essential for general well-being, and its relevance increases during pregnancy due to the physiological changes that directly affect a woman's oral cavity. This article reviews the scientific literature on the relationship between oral health and obstetric outcomes, highlighting the impact of periodontal diseases in pregnancy, the role of the dentist in the multidisciplinary prenatal team, and the importance of dental prophylaxis. Studies are reviewed that have documented how oral pathologies can influence complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia. In addition, the need to integrate dental services into prenatal care is addressed, especially in countries such as Mexico, where access to dental care during pregnancy remains limited. This work underscores the need for preventive education, timely treatment, and closer collaboration between gynecologists and dentists to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.
