ABSTRACT
Ageing can be defined as an inevitable and progressive deterioration of physiological function, accompanied by an increase in vulnerability and mortality with age. Several theories of why and how we age have been proposed. The classic theories postulate damage accumulation of mutations in old age. In contrast, programmed aging theories argue that ageing results from predetermined mechanisms encoded in the genome rather than stochastic damage accumulation. More recent theories say that programmatic developmental-type mechanisms primarily cause aging.
