Intervention on executive functions during neuropsychological rehabilitation in pediatric oncology

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Antineoplastic treatments generate different sequelae in the pediatric
oncology patient, the factors that influence the appearance of cognitive sequelae are
associated with the patient's age, the type of neoplasia, characteristics of the treatment
implemented and doses used, among other factors. Cognitive sequelae may not be
evident at the end of treatment and are silent consequences that sometimes become
visible when the patient enters the educational establishment, due to the demand for
school activities that require the implementation of cognitive resources. Thus, cognitive
sequelae in pediatric oncology constitute a risk factor for the acquisition of learning
and the inclusion of patients when they return to school.
Objective: To describe the process of intervention in executive functions in a patient
diagnosed with a central nervous system tumor, as well as the multidisciplinary
approach to cognitive sequelae.
Case presentation: Male patient enters the Oncology Rehabilitation Center of the Our
Children's Foundation (CROFNH) in August 2016, at the age of 5 years, 7 months, with a
diagnosis of Central Nervous System Tumor (Tu SNC) in the third ventricle. She starts
rehabilitation with multidisciplinary team that included: physiatrist physician,
kinesiology, occupational therapy, differential education, phonoaudiology and
neuropsychology.
Conclusions: The long-term manifestation of cognitive functions highlights the
importance of monitoring the cognitive profile at each new stage of neurodevelopment and detecting intervention needs in order to provide patients with the best conditions
for them to have an optimal quality of life.
