ABSTRACT
Family planning programs, crucial for public health, offer several contraceptive methods that differ in the mechanism of action and
effectiveness. This study aimed to determine the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of the subdermal contraceptive implant in Culiacan,
Sinaloa, Mexico, using a retrospective, descriptive, and observational design in patients over 18 years old. Data from 2018 to 2023
were analyzed and included sociodemographic characteristics, contraceptive efficacy, safety and tolerability, the latter being measured
through menstruation patterns, weight gain and side effects. The results showed a 100% efficacy in preventing pregnancies, with
minimal alterations in menstruation patterns and weight gain. The safety was confirmed by the absent of serious complications such
as ectopic pregnancies or severe bleeding. More than 20% of women requested removal of the implant mainly due to expiration and,
in a lesser extent, due to side effects like severe headaches or changes in menstruation patterns. In conclusion, the implant is an
effective, safe, and generally well-tolerated contraceptive method. These results highlight the importance of effective communication
about expectations and management of side effects between healthcare providers and contraceptive method users.
