ABSTRACT
Background: skin cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm
worldwide. Its incidence has increased in recent years.
Regarding the Mennonite population, there are no studies in our
country on the epidemiology of skin cancer within this community.
Objective: to study the frequency of skin cancer in a Mennonite
population.
Materials and methods: a descriptive, observational, retrospective,
and cross-sectional study conducted in a private dermatology
clinic in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. The study
involved reviewing medical records of Mennonite patients seen
between 2011 and 2015. The following variables were included:
age, sex, anatomical location of the dermatosis, type of cancer,
and histopathological result.
Results: a total of 1 213 records were reviewed, and 155 cases
were included. Of these, 115 presented with a single lesion and
15 had more than one lesion. The most common cancer was basal
cell carcinoma (n = 118) at 76.12%, followed by squamous cell carcinoma
(n = 32) at 20.64%, and melanoma (n = 5) at 3.22%. The
mean age was 59.2 years, ranging from 19 to 92 years.
Conclusion: the Mennonite community in Chihuahua showed a
high frequency of skin cancer, with basal cell carcinoma being the
most common. This is likely due to the presence of fair phototypes
and chronic sun exposure inherent to their sociocultural activities.
