ABSTRACT
Introduction: colonic atresia (CA) is a rare form of congenital intestinal atresia. Surgical intervention is required; however, choosing between primary anastomosis and staged management remains a clinical challenge.
Case description: we report the case of a newborn diagnosed with type III CA who underwent primary anastomosis within the first 48 hours of life. Although the initial outcome was favorable, a second surgical procedure was necessary due to an anastomotic leak.
Conclusions: primary anastomosis represents a feasible surgical option for managing CA, potentially avoiding the need for colostomy. The choice of surgical technique should be individualized based on patient-specific factors. Optimal perioperative care is essential to improve outcomes in these patients.
