ABSTRACT

Double-space epidural block with multimodal anesthesia allows for very good distribution of the anesthetic agents used, offering good anesthetic quality, good hemodynamic control, and fewer side effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anesthetic quality and safety of the double-space multimodal epidural block, and subsequent doses in high-definition liposuction. This descriptive study was carried out in women scheduled for high-definition liposuction of arms, torso, and occasionally legs as a sole procedure, or combined with abdominoplasty, breast surgery, or both. The anesthetic quality and vital signs were evaluated throughout the surgery, as well as adverse effects during and 24 hours after surgery. Seventy-nine women were analyzed, of whom 59 had adequate anesthetic quality, and 20 required deepened sedation, rescue peridural doses, or general anesthesia. The hemodynamic control was very good. The most common adverse effect was itching, and pain, at the end of the procedure these had disappeared. We consider the double-space multimodal epidural block a good alternative for surgeries involving extensive body surface areas.
