ABSTRACT

Introduction: high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), aimed at a better characterization of a small and complex region such as the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, has been achieved, with the aim of complementing the pre-surgical assessment for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Objective: the prevalence reported in recent studies is focused on anatomical variants with clinical repercussions. However, little is described regarding the variants involved in the functional endoscopic approach and drainage pathway, which corresponds to the variables of interest in this study. Material and methods: a retrospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was carried out in patients within FESS pre-surgical protocol in a private hospital, analyzing 200 non-contrast tomographic studies carried out over a year. Results: the prevalence of anatomical variants and classifications that had surgical implications were described and analyzed according to the RSNA "CLOSE" algorithm. Conclusion: preoperative CT assessment has allowed surgeons to reduce the rate of post-surgical complications, so it is imperative to know the definitions and prevalence of the central nasal cavity and paranasal sinus anatomical variations to be able to make a structured report that is useful and understandable among the specialties involved in its diagnostic and therapeutic assessment.
