ABSTRACT
Introduction: red blood cell transfusion used indiscriminately can result in unfavorable effects, so it is important to know the trends of each hospital in order to implement guidelines for the indication of transfusion and improve the quality of this therapeutic measure.
Objective: identify the values of hemoglobin, hematocrit and diagnoses associated with red blood cell transfusion in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Material and methods: an observational, retrospective, analytical and cross-sectional study was developed in the NICU of General Hospital of the Zone No. 1 Nueva Frontera of Tapachula, Chiapas, by reviewing patient records during January 2021-December 2023.
Results: a total of 115 patients were evaluated. The mean hemoglobin was 11.5 g/dL, hematocrit was 35.6%. Diagnosis most observed was anemia of prematurity.
Conclusions: it was demonstrated that internationally standardized guidelines or criteria for transfusion diverge from the practices developed in this hospital unit. Indication for transfusion should always be individualized through a comprehensive assessment to avoid negatively influencing in clinical evolution.
