ABSTRACT
Introduction: hemoglobin S (HbS) is a mutation in the β-globin gene, which leads to the polymerization of hemoglobin under conditions of low oxygenation.
Objective: to determine the presence of HbS in blood donors at the Banco de Sangre "Dr. Domingo Chanona Rodríguez" (BSDDCR) Chiapas, Mexico, 2023.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional observational study was carried out on effective donors, whose samples were induced to sickle cells with 2% sodium metabisulfite, the positive ones were confirmed with hemoglobin electrophoresis.
Results: of 1,500 samples, 12 (0.8%) were positive for sickle cell induction and 1,488 (99.2%) were negative. Hemoglobin electrophoresis showed an average of 54.8% HbA, 1.6% HbA2 and 43.6% HbS. The most frequent age group was 30 to 35 years old with five positive cases (41.7%), both sexes presented the same frequency of positivity and the O Rh positive blood group presented eight (66.7%) of the cases.
Conclusion: there are about 1 in 100 blood donors who have HbS in the BSDDCR, regardless of gender, who are donating blood and who are unaware that they carry the mutation of the HbS gene.
