ABSTRACT
Introduction: transfusion medicine promotes the responsible use of blood and seeks to maximize patient safety by preventing and controlling adverse transfusion reactions (ARRs), defined as an unexpected negative response by the patient to the infusion of a blood component.
Objectives: to analyze the frequency of ARRs reported by the Chilean public health system between 2012 and 2023.
Material and methods: retrospective descriptive study based on monthly statistical summaries (REM) for the years 2012 to 2023. Data were collected on the number of reported ARRs according to type and associated blood component, analyzing these data by means of Stata IC software, in addition to the use of frequency tables.
Results: between 2012 and 2023, a total of 13,469 ARRs were recorded, of which 53.099% were associated with red blood cell concentrates, 24.775% with platelet concentrates, and 22.124% with fresh frozen plasma. The most frequent reaction was allergic (42.356%), followed by non-hemolytic febrile reaction (41.569%).
Conclusions: the findings highlight the need to implement strategies aimed at reducing the incidence of adverse reactions, as well as strengthening the systems for recording and monitoring adverse events, in addition to the creation of a statewide hemovigilance program.
