ABSTRACT

Introduction: The incidence of risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity and tobacco smoking in increasingly aging popula-tions have contributed to the high incidence of acute coronary syndrome.
Objective: To determine the relationship of risk factors and cardiovascular compli-cations with the form of presentation of acute coronary syndrome.
Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study with analytical component was carried out. All patients with diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome, admitted to the Coro-nary Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Universitario Manuel Fajardo of Havana, Cuba, were enrolled, between 2016 and 2020.
Results: The risk factors with greater frequency were: ischemic heart disease (51%), high blood pressure (81.3%), diabetes mellitus (29.3%) and tobacco smoking (57.2%). Approximately 19.4% of patients presented some type of cardiovascular complica-tion. A significant association between a history of ischemic heart disease (p<0.001), high blood pressure (p<0.001), diabetes mellitus (p=0.034), dyslipidemia (p=0.023), and the presence of ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome was found.
Conclusions: A history of ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular complications were associated with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome, while smoking habit was associ-ated with ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome.
