Analysis of infanticide cases in Bolivia from 2015 to 2023

ABSTRACT

Infanticide is a crime that for centuries has been present in both developed and developing countries; it is defined as the homicide of a minor up to the age of one year. However, in Bolivia, this definition is broader, since the Bolivian Penal Code considers infanticide to be the killing of a child between 0 and 12 years of age. The phenomenon of infanticide in Bolivia occurs constantly, having existed between 2015 and 2023 similar amounts of cases of this type, registered by police investigative units nationwide; being the departments of La Paz, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba the ones that presented higher figures of infanticide. On the other hand, it was found that there were more male child victims of this crime; that it was in the urban area where there were more of these cases; and that the most used weapon was personal weapons (hands, feet, etc.). Unfortunately, due to the lack of records in the Bolivian Police system, it was not possible to determine the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim, or the motivation for committing the crime.
