Effectiveness of educational strategy for oral hygiene in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances

ABSTRACT
Background: fixed orthodontic appliances favor the accumulation of bacterial plaque, so these patients require greater control of their oral hygiene.Objective: determine the effectiveness of an educational strategy to increase oral hygiene in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.
Methods: a quasi-experimental study was carried out with a pretest and posttest-after design with two groups in the Orthodontics service of the provincial dentistry clinic “Dr. Justo Ortelio Pestana Lorenzo” from Sancti Spíritus from September 2020 to July 2022. Theoretical, empirical (observation, survey and interview) and statistical-mathematical methods were used.
Results: after applying the educational strategy in the study group, 75% of patients with a Good level of knowledge, favorable oral hygiene practices and a good oral hygiene index were obtained, as well as 83.3% with a favorable attitude regarding oral hygiene. , with statistically significant differences compared to the control group.
Conclusions: the educational strategy was effective as positive changes in the variables examined were observed in more than 75% of the patients; therefore, it contributed to increasing oral hygiene in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.
