ABSTRACT
Introduction: developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) encompasses abnormalities in the hip joint. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery recommends hip screening before four months of age due to major risk factors.
Objective: to associate risk factors with the development of DDH.
Material and methods: observational, analytical, retrospective, case-control, homodemic study, from August to December 2022. Newborns with two or more risk factors for DDH were included. They were classified into newborns with DDH confirmed by the Graf method (group 1) and newborns without DDH (group 2).
Results: the sample consisted of 86 newborns who met inclusion criteria, 41 with DDH and 45 without DDH. The mean age was 1.6 ± 0.49 months. The mean alpha angle of our cases and controls was 55.1° versus 65.4° (p < 0.001), and the beta angle was 57.24° versus 30.98°, respectively. Breech presentation was the only risk factor with significant evidence (odds ratio > 1, p < 0.001, 95% CI 3.59-39.26).
Conclusions: the risk factor with the greatest impact on the development of DDH was breech presentation; therefore, it is important to improve the detection, referral, and timely treatment of this population.
