ABSTRACT
Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a series of global changes, with a particular impact on the medical field, especially on mental health. It is well known that, due to the nature of their work, anesthesiologists are at a higher risk of developing such disorders.
Objective: to determine whether the pandemic had an impact on the mental health of Mexican anesthesiologists, evaluating the increase in the index of depression, anxiety, and suicidal risk.
Material and methods: this was carried out by applying questionnaires to medical anesthesiologists; a non-probabilistic sample was obtained at the convenience of voluntary participation. The Beck depression assessment, Zung anxiety scale, and Plutchik's high-risk suicide scale were applied. It was considered a statistically significant difference with a value of p < 0.05.
Results: the total group was 150 medical anesthesiologists, of which 78% direct care for patients with COVID-19. Only 18 doctors had a previous diagnosis of mental illness. 84% showed that they had some alteration in mental health, 40% depression, 64% anxiety and 20% suicidal risk.
Conclusion: the pandemic increased the incidence of depression, anxiety and suicidal risk in medical anesthesiologists, also increasing the use of psychoactive.
