ABSTRACT

Introduction: the strength of association of factors related to child sexual abuse (CSA) is different in different places. This wide range is due to differences in definition, measurement instruments, sample characteristics, and study designs. Objectives: to identify personal and domestic factors associated with sexual abuse in adolescents served by the PAS (Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse) Foundation. Material and methods: a case-control study was carried out, approved by the ethics committee and the confidentiality of the information was respected. Adolescents with CSA from the PAS Foundation (cases) and adolescents without CSA chosen at simple random from a secondary school (controls) were consecutively included. The dependent variable was CSA. The independent variables were personal and domestic factors. After training by psychologists from the PAS Foundation, a researcher collected information from adolescents who suffered from CSA between 2019-2020, and applied self-administered surveys to the control group of a high school. The association was measured with logistic regression with a 95% confidence interval. Results: the study included 49 adolescents with CSA aged 14.3 ± 2.1 years and 49 adolescents without CSA aged 13.4 ± 1.7 years. A model with logistic regression showed an association of CSA with the adolescent's perception of "not knowing how to protect their body from other people" (aOR= 7.21 95% CI 1.55-33.43), and "other domestic violence" (aOR= 5.12 95% CI 1.18-22.17). An association between CSA and low maternal education, adolescent aggressive behavior and poor family coexistence was ruled out. Conclusions: an association of ASI with adolescent perception of "not knowing how to protect their body from other people" and "domestic violence" was demonstrated.
