Emotional intelligence and academic performance of dentistry students

ABSTRACT
Background: Emotional intelligence is related to people's competencies in different areas by intervening in motivational, emotional and cognitive processes, that´s why it constitutes a vital factor in the academic performance of students.Objective: to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance in second-year students of the Dentistry degree at Camagüey University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out at the Dentistry Faculty of Camagüey University of Medical Sciences, from January to March 2023. Theoretical methods were used for the research foundation and the Emily Sterrett Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment Test was applied. The Bartholomew non-parametric chi-square (x2) test was used for the association between emotional intelligence and academic performance with a reliability of 95%. The data were processed using descriptive statistics.
Results: In both sexes, the most developed area of emotional intelligence is empathy (86.66%) followed by self-awareness in women (55.55%) and motivation in men (53.33%); however, neither empathy nor motivation showed a statistical association with academic performance, which was higher in women.
Conclusions: The statistical analysis supported a favorable effect between emotional intelligence and academic performance in second-year students of the Dentistry degree at Camagüey University of Medical Sciences.
