Types of pre-reading tasks to develop communication skills in English

ABSTRACT
Background: the development of integrated communication skills remains a priority for English teachers due to the need to achieve communicative competence in future Cuban medical science professionals.Objective: to design a typology of pre-reading tasks that contribute to the development of integrated English language communication skills in fourth-year medical students.
Methods: a mixed-method developmental research approach was carried at the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín from March 2023 to March 2024. Theoretical methods were used: historical-logical, analysis-synthesis, inductive-deductive, and systemic-structural-functional; empirical methods: documentary analysis, survey, scientific observation, and consultation with specialists; and mathematical-statistical methods for data processing.
Results: deficiencies were evident due to the limited use of one specific communicative skill as a primary focus for integrating others, and insufficient conscious planning of tasks that integrate two or more communicative skills, including pre-reading comprehension tasks.
Conclusions: the pre-reading tasks designed correspond to the objectives to be met in the English for Specific Purposes courses. They were deemed relevant after consulting with specialists. They were implemented with satisfactory results to achieve objectives.
