ABSTRACT
Background: University students' behavior is largely influenced by their use of smartphones, which has fostered the development of their learning styles during their academic activities. Objective: To describe students' learning behaviors using smartphones based on the development of their learning styles.
Methods: A descriptive, qualitative research study was carried out from September to December 2024 in the first-year students of the Bachelor's Degree in Health Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Technology and Nursing at the University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara. Theoretical methods were applied: historical-logical and analytical-synthetic; empirical methods were applied: a VAK test to assess students' sensory preferences based on the most commonly used perception systems; a student survey to assess smartphone use in their learning activities; and descriptive statistics were used for data processing.
Results: The VAK test revealed that students used several perceptual systems in combination, with a preference for the visual system. A balance was demonstrated between their preferences during learning activities regarding traditional methods and updated technological methods, specifically smartphones.
Conclusions: Students' academic behavior has evolved based on the development of their learning styles, which requires teachers to pay attention to their individual differences for the effective use of learning resources, including smartphones.
