ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the association
between stress levels and the presence of
overweight or obesity among medical
residents at a regional general hospital.
Methods: A longitudinal study was
conducted with first-year residents
from medical and surgical specialties.
Measurements were taken at two time
points: baseline and six months later.
Body mass index, waist circumference,
hip circumference, blood pressure,
and stress levels (as the main variable)
were assessed. Additionally, anxiety
and depression levels were evaluated
using validated instruments. Data were
presented as mean, standard deviation,
and confidence intervals. Student’s t
test, χ
2 test, and Spearman correlation
were applied, with a significance level of
p‹0.05.
Results: Participants included
53.4% women and 46.6% men. After six
months, the proportion of residents with
overweight decreased from 34.39% to
26.56%, while grade I obesity decreased
from 22.86% to 20.31%. At follow-up,
stress (p‹0.001), anxiety (p= 0.002),
and depression (p= 0.004) levels showed
statistically significant differences, indicating
changes in the scores of these
variables. The correlation between stress
and overweight/obesity was not statistically
significant.
Conclusion: Stress levels
were not significantly associated with the
presence of overweight or obesity among
medical residents.
