ABSTRACT

Introduction: the primary function of corneal tissue banks is to receive, process, evaluate, store, and distribute corneal tissue for transplant programs. Tissue quality is critical to transplant success. Objective: to document and analyze the results of corneal tissue evaluation from cadaveric donors diagnosed with head trauma at a mexican corneal bank. Material and methods: an observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, and descriptive study was conducted based on a review of corneal tissue records from cadaveric donors with head trauma. SPSS version 24 and Excel were used to analyze variables affecting endothelial count, identifying factors that influence tissue viability for transplantation. Results: between 2019 and 2023, the Corneal Tissue Bank at La Raza National Medical Center evaluated a total of 4,339 tissues, of which 162 had a history of head trauma, mostly from trauma hospitals. Seventy-six percent of donors were men and 51% were adults. Endothelial viability was higher in young donors and was related to the time elapsed since procurement, ophthalmological history, and donor sex. Between 11 and 22% of cases were positive for microorganisms, and between 1 and 9% were positive for serology. Conclusions: donor age is a significant predictor of endothelial count, but not the only one. A diagnosis of head trauma does not affect the quality of corneal tissue for transplantation at this bank.
