ABSTRACT

Introduction: motorcycle accidents are a public health problem, having a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of the population as well as the economy, mainly affecting men of productive age. The lower limbs are the most injured, often requiring surgical treatment. This leads to the following research question: What are the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of fractures in the lower limbs secondary to motorcycle accidents in patients at the Regional General Hospital No. 1 between October 2023 and September 2024? Material and methods: observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study of patients with fractures in the lower limbs secondary to a motorcycle accident, hospitalized at the Regional General Hospital No. 1 of the Mexican Social Security Institute, during the period from October 2023 to September 2024. Information was collected on: age, substance use at the time of the accident, education, hospital stay, fractured bone, fracture classification, and required surgical interventions. Results: a total of 127 patients were included, mostly men, with an average age of 29 years. 97.6% of patients denied substance use, and the average hospital stay was five days. The most affected bone was the tibia, accounting for 47.2%. Conclusions: fractures of the tibial shaft were the most common fractures among patients with fractures secondary to motorcycle accidents at the Regional General Hospital No. 1.
