ABSTRACT
Introduction: peri-implantitis is defined as a pathological condition
affecting the tissues surrounding dental implants. It is characterized
by inflammation of the peri-implant mucosa and the progressive loss
of supporting bone. With the increasing popularity and demand for
dental treatments involving the use of dental implants, the question
arises as to whether peri-implant diseases, especially peri-implantitis,
could represent a growing health problem for dentists and healthcare
professionals.
Material and methods: a literature search was
conducted using Medline via PubMed for systematic reviews reporting
the prevalence of peri-implantitis in patients. Articles reporting the
number of implants placed or sold worldwide were also identified to
estimate the approximate number of new cases of peri-implantitis
that could be expected per year.
Results: four reviews were found that
met the inclusion criteria, reporting a prevalence of peri-implantitis
between 9 and 20%. The studies also agreed that the estimated annual
implant sales are approximately five million in the United States and
between 12 and 13 million globally.
Conclusion: given the continued
increase in the sale and placement of dental implants worldwide, and
considering the increased prevalence of peri-implantitis reported in
various studies, this could become a significant oral health problem
in the coming years.
