ABSTRACT

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is formed by the mandibular condyle, which articulates with the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. This facilitates movements such as elevation, depression, protrusion, retrusion, and lateralization. In recent years, laser therapy has gained relevance in the management of symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. The objective was to analyze, through a literature review, the results of laser application for pain reduction in TMJ disorders. The study is based on a descriptive literature review. A total of 283 scientific articles were identified in health databases and filtered using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Twelve case studies and randomized clinical trials were selected, providing a solid basis for the study. It is concluded that laser therapy is an effective therapeutic modality that significantly reduces pain in a shorter period of time compared to conventional therapy, and therefore its application was effective.
