ABSTRACT

Introduction: a mature cystic teratoma or dermoid cyst is a rare congenital lesion resulting from the sequestration of pluripotential cells during embryonic development. Although it can occur anywhere in the body, its location in the head and neck region is infrequent, representing less than 7% of all cases. Within this region, the floor of the mouth is the most frequently involved anatomical site. Objective: describe the surgical technique and histopathologic diagnosis of a clinical case of a mature cystic teratoma located in the floor of the mouth. Case report: this is a 19-year-old female patient who came for consultation to the Oral Surgery Service of the Surgical Area of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Zulia, presenting a lesion in the floor of the mouth with three years of evolution, which refers an exacerbated growth since five months ago, asymptomatic. The computed tomography scan of the face and neck shows an isodense image covering the floor of the mouth and extending to the supra-hyoid region, with well-defined borders, causing slight airway stenosis. The patient was taken to the operating table under balanced general anesthesia where a surgical approach was performed for excision of the lesion. Conclusion: this report underlines the importance of clinical evaluation, imaging studies and, mainly, histopathologic confirmation to differentiate these lesions from other pathologic entities in this complex anatomic region, to achieve an accurate diagnosis and an adequate surgical approach for their management.
